Sunday, September 30, 2018 10:00am – 3:00pm The Getty: Grades: 4-8 Cost: $85 (Scholarships Available) App deadline: Friday, September 21 Join us for a day of hands-on, deep learning about the scientific and cultural legacy of Leonardo Da Vinci, often referred to as the Restless Renaissance Rebel, whose contributions to the fields of science, art, technology, and inventing are immeasurable. We will spend the day discovering his influence on the Renaissance period and his – often considered – unorthodox methods of questioning and catalyzing the fields of mathematics, architecture, schematics, and cartography – to name a few! Discussions will center on the intersection of science, art, and culture, as examples of his world-famous work are viewed and analyzed.

Students will experience a day in the life of an art historian and inventor and will form an opinion on the popular opinion that “his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, while the man himself mysterious and remote.” How to prepare: Wear shoes comfortable enough for walking around The Getty and its outdoor grounds and gardens! Be prepared to work in pairs or small groups for inquiry-based activities and discussions. Bring a notebook or sketchbook, plus sack lunch and water bottle.

All other materials will be provided. Registration for this event is full. Applicants will be placed on a waitlist. About the Instructors Tristan Murphy A recent graduate of California Institute of Technology, Tristan has a deep love for teaching and all forms of education.
He is driven to reconstruct the way that students look at school and its impact on learning, providing students with the tools to learn how to create new knowledge as opposed to rote memorization. After entering college as a mechanical engineering major, Tristan moved on to complete his BS in Geology and History. Though he began by teaching engineering and robotics to elementary and middle school students four years ago, Tristan has since taught people of all ages in rock climbing, Geology, and sword fighting. He believes in well-rounded education that will provide insight into the multifaceted nature of science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. He is currently pursuing further studies in history, philosophy, and language in preparation for PhD studies in History. Alessandra Santucci Alessandra is a somewhat recent transplant from Chicago, IL, where she received her BA from Northwestern University in Italian Studies and Visual Arts. With over 10 years of instructional experience, including her time as a 4th/5th grade teacher at the Walden School in Pasadena, Alessandra loves to share her passion for Art and Design with all students.

She particularly enjoys combining art and design with other disciplines to create interesting, well-rounded courses. Alessandra is a dedicated proponent of polymathic study, and she believes that the most effective educational communities nurture creativity and curiosity, celebrate individuality, and foster a sense of responsibility for self, environment, and both local and global communities. In addition to freelance work in Graphic and Web Design, Alessandra is a certified yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance and teaches group and private yoga lessons.
